The World Car of the Year awards’ initial finalists for each of five categories have been announced and several BMW models are up for multiple categories.

The judging is performed by 75 automotive journalists and each candidate (car) for the award must be new and available for sale on at least two continents during the time period between January 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015.

Three finalists for each category will be named at the Geneva show next month and the winners will then be revealed at the New York auto show in April. Last year’s winners were the Audi A3 (overall), Porsche 911 GT3 (performance), Mercedes-Benz S-Class (luxury), BMW i3 (green) and the BMW i3 again (design).
